Over the Canada day long weekend, Nolan, my mom (his Amma) and I all headed out to Kelowna, BC! I am pretty sure I am the ONLY Albertan who has NEVER been to Kelowna before, and I was in desperate need of a vacation. Originally, it was planned to just be Nolan and I, but after talking with my mom about it – the drive out there and possible places to stop – she was really interested and asked if she could tag along. My mom and I have not spent more than 5 days together since I was probably, 8 or 9?, so it was pretty interesting going into it, and coming out – we had a great time and I’m happy we got to spend some mom and daughter time together! My mom loves the mountains, loves drives, and loves coffee stops – so we were a perfect team to head out on an 8 hour drive together. My step-dad and her ALWAYS do little day trips or over night driving trips through the mountains, find a place to stop and get up early and keep on driving. I LOVE driving as well – so again – it worked out nicely 🙂
The drive out was so beautiful, I have always wanted to drive out West, through the Mountains, farther than just Banff or Lake Louise. I’ve been out to Golden a few times this passed year to a friends place, but that was the farthest for me. I had never seen “Snow Sheds” before, and thought those were the coolest thing! I couldn’t believe what I saw on the drive out, it was so beautiful! I couldn’t imagine those roads during the winter though, I think it would be so cool to see, and maybe a little scary!
I didn’t get to take many photos on the way out as I was driving but when we stopped, we took a few. I heard it usually takes about 7-8 hours to drive out, but I think it took us around 10-11 with all of our stops, AND getting stuck in traffic for an hour on the way there, and stuck for about two hours on the way back. Poor Nolan, he did great though, he talked to us a lot, honked at trucks as we passed them and slept a lot. I bet you are thinking we had to stop a lot for Nolan, – No! – we stopped more for my mom because she had to pee every 5 minutes! ha-ha! One of the times we stopped, Nolan and I sat on the side of the road and he kept getting trucks to honk for him, and would laugh and clap every time a semi honked! I felt so proud I taught him how to honk to get trucks to honk for us, although I am not sure if the people around us thought it was funny and cute or just irritating. Who cares though, we had a great time and my boy LOVES it! Every time he sees a big truck, a bus or a train now, he says “toot toot” – Melts my heart!
Our hotel was just on the edge of Kelowna. Again – I had never been before, and never really booked a trip for myself before, so I basically took the cheapest – first hotel I could find which ended up being kind of a sketchy dive! *Hand in face* – thank goodness my mom was there! The first night, all we could hear was our neighbours yelling and dancing to their loud, horrible music! So my mom went to the front desk and the lady got them to quiet down, thank goodness! There was a door that looked like it joined the two rooms together and had a table in front of it, but you could hear everything in the next room through that door. Next time – I know where I want to book and what to look for ha-ha! We got in around dinner time and were so exhausted – we decided to take it easy for the night, get some rest and get ready for the next day.
We spent 3 days on the beach. I had wanted to hike and tour around a little, but it ended up being SO hot, and with only having 3 days there, and another 2 driving – we decided to just beach it everyday and relax, catch some rays and play and we had a blast!
We would get up in the mornings and get breakfast, coffees, and head to the beach. It was never to busy and the water was nice and warm. Nolan loved the sand and the water so much. It was to much fun watching him play and enjoy everything, splash around, get excited – I was so happy 🙂 When we went to Mexico earlier this year, he did not enjoy being brought into the water, you couldn’t even put him down on the shore, but this trip – he let me bring him in, he would run in and out of the water, sit and let the little waves come and splash him and even let me dunk him a few times ha-ha. It was nice to have him a little more comfortable.
I have … NEVER done something like this with my mom either, it was really nice to see her out and enjoying her self, being comfortable and just catching up with her. We had a really nice time, talked a lot, laughed a lot, and relaxed. It was nice for Nolan to spend sometime with his Amma, and for her to get to play with him more.
Around mid-day each day I would take Nolan for a little walk up and down the beach pathways so he could take a nap as the sun just wears him right out. The kid doesn’t stop playing, no matter how tired and exhausted he gets, its like he REFUSES to give in – And that’s – everywhere ha-ha. Its like he doesn’t want to miss a thing. This way it was nice for me to get out along the pathways and get some walking in and see things. I could walk for DAYS! One of the days, my friend who now lives in Kelowna – came to see us on the beach. It was so nice to see her as we hadn’t seen each other for a while.
On the last day, as we packed up our last day at the beach, we decided to head to an ice-cream store and walk along the beach even farther. I love a good ice-cream store full of flavours, even though my go to is ALWAYS bubble-gum. They gave Nolan a baby Strawberry cone, it was too cute, and watching his face change because it was so cold.
All in all – it was a lovely trip and I really would like to get out there again once more this summer if its possible. I would like to go for longer this time and would like to spend some time at the beach again, and see if we can find some good spots to hike 🙂
Till next time! – K
